Welcome to the marvelous month of May! Gradually, we're returning to a state of normalcy with the help of scientific research, mass vaccinations, and other safe practices. Now that May is here, there are many things to look forward to such as graduation, Mother's Day, the Indy 500, Memorial Day, warmer weather, vacations, etc. To say that it has been an unforgettable year is quite the understatement. But, what is not an understatement is the strength and resilience of the IUPUI community. IUPUI is an amazing institution that takes care of its own. Despite the challenging months brought on by the current global pandemic, let us not regret the past. We should use it as an opportunity to reflect, learn, and grow. In the words of Socrates, "the secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new."
Warm regards - IUPUI Center for TRIP
IUPUI TRIP Scholar of the Month, Mark Urtel
Examining the Impact of Intramural Youth Sports on SEL (social and emotional learning)
The discipline of kinesiology is the science and study of human movement. Human movement can be expressed as physical activity, sport, exercise, or play. Professor Urtel and his colleagues look at this across the human lifespan and at all ability levels. Professor Urtel focuses on school - age youth who spend most of their time during the week at school. Naturally, this is a great place to look at programs and interventions that not only focus on the health outcomes from physical activity, but the academic readiness and positive behavioral outcomes that are associated with consistent physical activity. On May 28, 2021 at 12noon (EST), Professor Urtel will engage a virtual audience in a conversation about the translational research that he is using to create a more comprehensive physical fitness program for school - aged youth.
