A Legacy of Community Engagement Support
As chancellor of IU Indianapolis, Charles Bantz firmly believed in the power of community-engaged research and university–community partnerships to make a lasting impact on our area.
The Charles R. Bantz Chancellor’s Community Fellowship award ensures his legacy lives on by providing funding for community-engaged scholars each year. The importance of community-engaged translational work is core to the schools of IU Indianapolis. The awards are granted annually for up to one of each of the following: an IU Indianapolis faculty member, IU Indianapolis student, and/or leader of a community organization working to address a challenge, opportunity, or problem confonting a local, not-for-profit organization in Indianapolis. Recipients are supported in the translating of their work with community partners, thus positively impacting people’s lives. The award are supported by gifts and the campus.

Programs
In 2013, the Bantz-Petronio Translating Research Into Practice Faculty Award (the “TRIP Award”) was established with a gift from Chancellor Emeritus Charles Bantz and Professor Emerita Sandra Petronio. It is intended to recognize outstanding work in translating research into practice by a faculty member at IU Indianapolis. The recipient receives a cash award of $1,000.
In 2015, IU Indianapolis established the Charles R. Bantz Chancellor’s Community Fellowship in recognition of the leadership and contributions of Charles R. Bantz to the IU Indianapolis campus and Indianapolis community. This grant initiative reflects Bantz’s dedication to research that embraces community-driven goals, creates university-community partnerships, and results in community impact. The Bantz Community Fellowship is intended to support/advance an established community engaged researcher to advance the project to the next level. The award amount is $40,000.
