Indianapolis City-County Council approves resolution in honor of the work of Professor Paul Mullins
|
Last month, the City-County Council of Indianapolis and Mayor Joe Hogsett approved a resolution, in which they honored the work of Professor Paul Mullins, TRIP Scholar and Chancellor’s Professor of Anthropology at IUPUI. Professor Mullins was recognized for his many contributions to our understanding of the critical roles that race and the color line have played in shaping the development of the Circle City. In addition to an impressive corpus of scholarly publications, Dr. Mullins has also made his research available to the broader public through two widely read blog sites that he maintains: Invisible Indianapolis and Archaeology and Material Culture.

Best Wishes to TRIP Scholar

TRIP Scholar, Professor Ukamaka Oruche, recently accepted a new position at the University of South Florida College of Nursing. In this role, she will serve as the Gordon Keller Professor of Nursing. The IU Indianapolis School of Nursing has been a key part of Professor Oruche’s life since 1994, both as a student and as a faculty member. She was appointed as an Assistant Professor in 2011 and promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2017. She has admirably served as Director of Global Programs since 2019 and as the Special Assistant to the Dean since 2021. Good luck Professor Oruche!

Nasser Paydar Confirmed to Federal Position
|
IUPUI Chancellor Emeritus Nasser H. Paydar was confirmed as assistant secretary for postsecondary education by the U.S. Senate on Aug. 5, in Washington, D.C. In this role, Paydar will work under U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to advance the Biden-Harris administration’s efforts to make higher education in the United States more inclusive, equitable and affordable.

TRIP Scholar Receives New Appointment
|
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar, Professor Teresa Sosa. She was recently appointed by the IUPUI Office of Academic Affairs as its first director of equity education. Professor Sosa previously served as the office’s faculty fellow for diversity and inclusion, working on projects related to faculty hiring, and researching ongoing efforts to recruit and retain a more diverse faculty.

Did you know that public colleges and universities are considered qualifying employers for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program? There are a limited number of PSLF waivers that allow borrowers to submit prior years of public service that may not have been credited. This limited opportunity ends on October 31, 2022. IUPUI Staff Mentoring Program
|
The IUPUI Staff Mentoring Program is based on a campus-wide model aimed to support a diverse cohort of participants each year. One-on-one mentoring will create an opportunity to expose participants to rich experiences and unique expertise that enhance the mentee’s and mentor’s understanding of various topics, techniques and skills that foster positive professional and personal growth. The program is designed to be flexible to meet the needs of both the mentee and mentor, to ensure optimal program results. IUPUI full-time staff from all schools/units and all ranks are eligible to apply as mentees or mentors. The mentors will be from a diverse range of ranks and roles. Peer to peer mentoring will be allowed. Deadline is September 8, 2022.

IU Center for Survey Research Capabilities and Expertise
|
The IU Center for Survey Research has capabilities from traditional survey design and data collection (using web, mail, telephone, in-person) to qualitative interviews to specimen collection. They provide up to 2 hours of free consultation to any IU faculty, staff, or student and then charge based on hourly rates determined by the university. During the academic year, they offer free weekly consulting at two locations on the Bloomington campus (Tuesdays from 10-12 and Wednesdays from 12-1:30) but are happy to meet by Zoom for people in Indy.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Substance Use Research Fund - Request for Proposals
|
New research funding from IU addresses racial and ethnic disparities specific to substance use disorder. $25,000 is available per grant. Funding will be available to IU faculty without regard to field or discipline to address this critical issue as broadly as possible. The research must be innovative, new, or reflect a new application of existing research. Priority will be given to efforts that seek to better understand and meet the needs of communities of color and utilize engagement methods with partners or the communities (such as community-based participatory research or person-centered outcomes research methods) which build sustainable relationships and trust in communities. All IU faculty (whether tenure-track or clinical track) on all IU campuses are welcome to apply.

The 2023 - 2024 U.S. Fulbright Scholar competition is now open. The program awards American scholars more than 800 fellowships annually to nearly 140 countries, where they lecture and/or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

|
The Indiana Statistical Consulting Center supports IU faculty, staff and graduate students by helping with the planning phase, writing the methodological portion of grant proposals, carrying out the proposed analysis and writing up results once the grant is funded. Collaborators will meet free of charge with the agreement that their efforts will be compensated by the grant if funded.
