“Crossing the Thin Blue Line: Translating Intergroup Theory into Social Action”
Howard Giles, a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara was the inaugural TRIP Keynote Speaker. Dr. Giles has a long history of publishing on intergroup and intergenerational communication issues and notably, he developed the “Accommodation Theory,” applying the perspective to a number of everyday problems people face when they are from different cultures, have different group affiliations, or try to communicate across generations. His presentation turns to a particular group, law enforcement.
Professor Giles’ selection as the IUPUI Center for TRIP Inaugural Keynote Speaker is based on his keen ability to effectively illustrate how to translate research investigations to make evidenced-based changes in communicative behavior. His focus on improving the way law enforcement teams function as a group is a unique application of Dr. Giles’ translational intergroup research.
