New projects, discoveries, and creations by IUPUI faculty, students, and community partners are highlighted in the 2022 IUPUI Center for Translating Research Into Practice (TRIP) annual report.
2022 Award Recipients
The 2022 Charles Bantz Community Fellowship was awarded to Lahny Silva, Professor of Law in the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law. The project “Community Engagement at its “Best”: A Holistic Approach to Prisoner Reentry” is a collaboration between Thomas Ridley’s 1 Like Me, the Martin Luther King Community Center, and the Marion County Prosecutor's Office. The goal of the project is to utilize this collaborative effort in the reentry clinic to reduce recidivism and enhance public safety at a grassroots level in Indianapolis by helping released people from prison successfully navigate reentry related issues.
The 2022 Charles Bantz Community Scholar Award was presented to Richard Brandon-Friedman, Assistant Professor in the Indiana University School of Social Work and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Indiana University School of Medicine. The project, “Families in Transition: Development of a Therapeutic Group for Gender-Diverse Youth and Their Caregivers,” is a collaboration between GenderNexus, Gender Expansive Kids & Co. (GEKCO), and PFLAG-Fishers. This research project will evaluate a therapeutic support group designed to meet the needs of gender-diverse youth (GDY) and their caregivers. The group will enhance the social and emotional well-being of participants through psychoeducation, skill development, familial relationship and communication building, and community connectedness.
The 2022 Bantz-Petronio Translating Research Into Practice Faculty Award recipient is Todd Skaar, PhD. Dr. Skaar, an internationally recognized leader in the field of pharmacogenomics, received this award in recognition of his groundbreaking research and his dedication to mentoring the next generation of translational scholars. Dr. Skaar is a professor of medicine in the IU School of Medicine and a co-leader at the Cancer Prevention and Control & Symptom Science Program of the Indiana University Melvin & Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center. He also currently serves as the interim chief of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology, an internationally recognized division of expert investigators in drug therapies.
Events
In 2022, the IUPUI Center for Translating Research Into Practice (TRIP) hosted 14 events both virtually and in-person. These events included the Scholar of the Month event that provides a virutal opportunity for TRIP Faculty Scholars to share their research with the community and engage in thoughtful dialogue. In addition to these monthly events, the IUPUI Center for TRIP hosted its annual Keynote event featuring Indiana University President Pamela Whitten and the Annual Fall Showcase and Awards Program. 629 people attended these events. TRIP Scholar Accomplishments
Professor Rebecca Bartlett Ellis, was named a 2022 Research Frontiers Trailblazer for her research that is focused on improving the lives of people with chronic kidney disease. Professor Bartlett Ellis conducts transdisciplinary research to improve how people manage their medications and improve health. Her long-term goal is to improve medication adherence through behavioral interventions that enhance medication management among people with chronic conditions and improve their quality of life.
The City-County Council of Indianapolis and Mayor Joe Hogsett approved a resolution, in which they honored the work of Professor Paul Mullins, 2016 Bantz Community Fellowship recipient and Chancellor’s Professor of Anthropology at IUPUI. Professor Mullins was recognized for his many contributions to our understanding of the critical roles that race and the color line have played in shaping the development of the Circle City. In addition to an impressive corpus of scholarly publications, Dr. Mullins has also made his research available to the broader public through two widely read blog sites that he maintains: Invisible Indianapolis and Archaeology and Material Culture.
IUPUI Chancellor Emeritus Nasser H. Paydar was confirmed as assistant secretary for postsecondary education by the U.S. Senate on Aug. 5, 2022 in Washington, D.C. In this role, Paydar will work under U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to advance the Biden-Harris administration’s efforts to make higher education in the United States more inclusive, equitable and affordable.
