The Bantz Community Fellow and Scholar Awards offer faculty a unique opportunity to use community-engaged research to address complex problems by linking academic expertise to community action. The Bantz Community Fellowship provides $40,000 and the Bantz Community Scholar Award provides $25,000 (match required for both awards). View previous awardees.

Celebration of IUPUI Translational Research : 2021 in Review
|
Thank you for your continued support of the IUPUI Center for Translating Research Into Practice (TRIP). In an effort to better serve our community, we are hosting an informal, virtual focus group later this month to gather feedback on the center and its programs. We want to learn more about your thoughts, opinions, suggestions, and experiences. This is an invitation to have a thoughtful conversation about the IUPUI campus and community-engaged research.
The focus group will be held virtually on Friday, December 10, 2021 from 12 noon to 1 pm (ET) via Zoom. There is limited space, so please RSVP as soon as possible. Register.

Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Human-Computer Interaction, Karl MacDorman, was featured in a story about virtual influencers on the TODAY show. Professor MacDorman is a globally recognized expert on the phenomenon known as the "Uncanny Valley," which is commonly experienced by those interacting with or viewing humanoid robots and digital avatars increasingly used in social media, movies, and other platforms.

|
Congratulations to Richard Holden, PhD, on being awarded the Jack Kraft Innovators Award from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society at the organization's 2021 international annual meeting. The award honors an individual for significant efforts to extend or diversify the application of human factors and ergonomics principles and methods. Learn more.

Congratulations to Rebecca Bartlett Ellis on her induction as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). She was recently celebrated at the AAN Health Policy Conference in Washington, DC.

Office of Academic Affairs Appoints New Faculty Fellow
|
The IUPUI Office of Academic Affairs has appointed two diversity and inclusion Faculty Fellows: psychology professor Leslie Ashburn-Nardo and urban teacher education associate professor Teresa Sosa. Through the Faculty Fellows Program, participants collaborate with campus leaders on initiatives tailored to their background and interests. It also prepares them for future campus leadership roles.
Professor Sosa’s longstanding teaching and research commitments in the IUPUI School of Education involve working with Black and Brown youth in urban communities and broadening understandings of how literacy education can be leveraged to disrupt educational injustices. As a fellow, Professor Sosa will work collaboratively with campus entities on projects associated with improving current practices related to faculty hiring and to increase campus literacy of diversity and inclusion in higher education. She will also engage in research in support of ongoing efforts to recruit and retain a diverse professoriate. Learn more.

Congratulations to Rebecca Bartlett Ellis and Her Team on Their New Grant
|
Professor Rebecca Bartlett Ellis and her team were awarded a two year, R21 grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research totaling $435,875. This important project will test an innovative digital health SystemCHANGETM intervention (SystemCHANGE™-Digi) to improve adherence to medications that inhibit the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) compared with an attention control of patient education (Control-Digi) among people with chronic kidney disease who have poor medication adherence. The team will conduct a two group randomized controlled trial to evaluate intervention acceptability, credibility, and preliminary efficacy among patients from two large health care systems.

Curriculum Enhancement Grant Open for Faculty: The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning’s 2022 Curriculum Enhancement Grant request for proposals is now open. Proposals are due by Jan. 31, 2022. The aim of the grant is provide support as well as time and funds to implement teaching interventions designed to improve student learning outcomes, experiences and success. Staff Council Professional Grants: The purpose of the Staff Professional Development Grants program, sponsored by the IUPUI Staff Council, is to award recognition and financial support to individual staff members to engage in professional development activities that align with IUPUI's Strategic Plan, contribute to the success of IUPUI, and enhance growth of the staff member. The remaining deadlines for the fiscal year are December 1, 2021 and April 1, 2022. The award amount is $400. Help Cultivate Digital Literacy Across Indiana University: Be one of 35 IU faculty in the inaugural cohort of the Digital Gardener Faculty Fellowship Program and work to incorporate digital literacy, creativity, and learning into your teaching. Faculty will build individual skills, develop curriculum materials, and work collaboratively with others across campuses and disciplines. Fellows will receive a $500 stipend for participation.
