“What are we trying to accomplish?”: Student resistance as racial wisdom
My work deeply influences how we come to see classroom interactions in urban settings that focus on the wisdom and ingenuity of marginalized students. My work makes clear how students are often resisting the infrastructure of schooling that works against them. In working with classrooms over long periods of time (months and sometimes calendar year), I am able to document how students are always resisting and defying processes and practices that are detrimental to their identities and local practices. These understandings allow us to consider ways to improve students' experiences in schools, across all disciplines and that center on their knowledge, wisdom, and affect.
