Professor Sanematsu uses design methods to create a ‘good fit’ between problems, solutions, and people, particularly in health care. Her research in service design helps tailor interventions in medicine and community health by focusing on people’s real-life actions, environments, thoughts, and emotions. During this discussion, she’ll share examples of her work in service design from collaborations with the IU School of Medicine, and show how her research and teaching overlap.

Patients from high poverty neighborhoods at risk of failing to be waitlisted or death during liver transplant evaluation
In a recent study published in Liver Transplantation, authors including Dr. Lauren Nephew, assistant professor of medicine in the IU School of Medicine, concluded that patients from high poverty neighborhoods are at risk of failing to be waitlisted and death during the transplant evaluation. “I think our program and many programs around the country would benefit from a comprehensive liver transplant care access clinic and program for patients with high-risk social determinants of health,” said Dr. Nephew. “We could be pioneers in that space, but it certainly would take a significant financial investment.”

Dr. Kurt Kroenke, M.D., MACP, led a team that investigated whether adult patients and their proxies — typically spouses, children or other family caregivers — agree on what they tell physicians about a patient’s symptoms and quality of life, finding that they are more likely to agree on the physical than the psychological.
