Professor Lea Bishop is recognized internationally as a leading expert on book hunger and the right to read. Her research on intellectual property and distributive justice has shaped human rights law at the United Nations and informed her proposal for a plan to end childhood book hunger globally by 2030. She is tenured at Indiana University's Robert H. McKinney School of Law, where she teaches copyright law and human rights and studies the impact of ChatGPT and other generative AI. Following a national search, he was selected as the executive associate dean in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering in Indianapolis and will begin his appointment on July 1. He is currently chair of the Department of Human-Centered Computing at the school and a professor of human-computer interaction.

Enhanced Spiritual Care Improves Well-Being of ICU Surrogate Decision-Makers
|
TRIP Scholar Dr. Alexia Torke and her team found that those receiving enhanced spiritual care had a clinically significant decline in anxiety. Additionally, family surrogates receiving enhanced spiritual support experienced higher spiritual well-being and satisfaction with spiritual care compared to individuals receiving usual care from a hospital chaplain.

TRIP Scholar Receives Promotion
|
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Dr. Wendy Miller. She has been appointed Executive Associate Dean of Research at the IU School of Nursing, effective July 1, 2023.
Dr. Miller joined IU School of Nursing in 2005, serving as a clinical instructor. She became an Assistant Professor in 2012, an Associate Professor with Tenure in 2018 and Professor in 2023. She has been serving as the Associate Dean of the IU School of Nursing Bloomington campus since March 2022. She also serves as the T32 co-director, and will continue to serve in that role.
Dr. Miller’s program of research is focused on chronic disease self-management, specifically focusing on improving the quality of life of people with epilepsy via patient-centered interventions. Her work is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health via a $1.5 million R01 from the National Library of Medicine. Other external funding includes UCB Pharma and Upsher-Smith and an NIH P30 for the development of a Brain Safety Lab in collaboration with the IU School of Medicine and the Indiana University Center for Aging Research.
She also holds leadership positions with the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, The Epilepsy Foundation of America, and the American Epilepsy Society.

TRIP Scholar Receives 2023 XRI Faculty Fellow Grant
|
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Dr. Peggy Stockdale. She was among a total of 6 IUPUI faculty that received an Extended Reality Initiative (XRI) Faculty Fellow Grant. With the grant, Dr. Stockdale and her fellow recipients will be developing and implementing Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) assignments/projects/activities into their courses for the fall 2023 semester.

The inaugural Summer Institute will be held June 5–23, 2023 and will offer a series of intensive courses appropriate for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and active researchers across a broad array of topics. Volunteers assist with setting up meal distribution sites, bagging meals, directing traffic, distributing community resources, loading food boxes and uplifting the community. Two shifts available: Packing from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., and distribution from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Light refreshments are provided for breakfast and a boxed lunch for the 9:30 am- 12:30 pm volunteers. Warm beverages and bottled water are available throughout the day.

The Kruse Family Stardust Terrace at the History Center is the place to be on Thursday nights in downtown Indianapolis. The 2023 Concerts on the Canal series features a spectacular lineup of entertainers. Concerts begin at 6 pm. While reserved tables are available for purchase, sit along the canal and enjoy the music for FREE. Guests can bring their own chair or blanket and sit on the grassy areas along the Central Canal. Another FREE perk is that the Indiana History Center is free during the summer concert season on Thursdays. The museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm. Free parking at the History Center is on a first-come basis. Nearby street or garage parking is available for a fee.

|
Storing data correctly is the key to keeping it safe. Storage owners must use the Institutional Storage Request Form if storing or sharing restricted or critical data. IU’s University Information Policy Office also reminds you that individually owned storage spaces such as Google at IU My Drive and Microsoft OneDrive at IU are never an appropriate place to share institutional data.

Reciprocal Innovation Planning Grants Available
|
A new round of global health planning grants provides funding to establish research collaborations focused on improving the health and well-being of Hoosiers and people in resource-limited communities around the world. Proposals must address a critical global health challenge such as infectious or non-communicable diseases, infant and maternal health, mental health or access to quality health care and demonstrate collaboration with at least one partner from a low- and middle-income country. The application deadline is March 30, 2023.

Download Statistical Analysis Software At No Charge
|
A reminder that you can install statistical, mathematical, and qualitative analysis software packages such as SPSS and Stata for no additional cost. Since this UITS initiative began in July 2022, the number of downloads is three times higher than it was in the prior year, with around 3,000 students, faculty, and staff taking advantage of access to the software.

IU Center for Survey Research Capabilities and Expertise
|
The IU Center for Survey Research has capabilities from traditional survey design and data collection (using web, mail, telephone, in-person) to qualitative interviews to specimen collection. They provide up to 2 hours of free consultation to any IU faculty, staff, or student and then charge based on hourly rates determined by the university. During the academic year, they offer free weekly consulting at two locations on the Bloomington campus (Tuesdays from 10-12 and Wednesdays from 12-1:30) but are happy to meet by Zoom for people in Indy.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Substance Use Research Fund - Request for Proposals
|
New research funding from IU addresses racial and ethnic disparities specific to substance use disorder. $25,000 is available per grant. Funding will be available to IU faculty without regard to field or discipline to address this critical issue as broadly as possible. The research must be innovative, new, or reflect a new application of existing research. Priority will be given to efforts that seek to better understand and meet the needs of communities of color and utilize engagement methods with partners or the communities (such as community-based participatory research or person-centered outcomes research methods) which build sustainable relationships and trust in communities. All IU faculty (whether tenure-track or clinical track) on all IU campuses are welcome to apply.

|
The Indiana Statistical Consulting Center supports IU faculty, staff and graduate students by helping with the planning phase, writing the methodological portion of grant proposals, carrying out the proposed analysis and writing up results once the grant is funded. Collaborators will meet free of charge with the agreement that their efforts will be compensated by the grant if funded.
