HIV and the lung
I have studied how HIV affects the immune system in the lung, leading to immunodeficiency, chronic inflammation, and susceptibility to diseases. Subsequent work examined how highly active antiretroviral therapy reduces the viral load in the lung and restores normal lung immunity. Most recently I have been funded to study the respiratory microbiome in normal and HIV-infected individuals. Our interest is in how the respiratory microbiome modulates normal lung homeostasis and immune function.
