The Art of Portraiture: An Urban School Art Teacher’s Use of Art as Creative Resistance
The ideas and origins of critical pedagogy have spawned unique perspectives and contributions that other scholars, in different disciplines, have now incorporated in developing modernized approaches to critical pedagogy. Because resistance is a form of negotiation directed towards school-based hegemony, my work illustrates teachers ability to use art as a form of negotiation to challenge the limitations faced by urban students. My work examines effective teaching practices of Latino teachers. The project looks at individuals and the impact these individuals have on the kids in their classrooms. My hope is to glean from the teaching perspectives and experiences narrated by these exemplary educators more about the task of successfully educating children within a societal context constantly changing yet consistently hostile to all things coded Black and/or Brown.
