Stem Cell-Based Therapies for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Using an animal model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) a devastating motor neuron disease, our evidence indicates that the use of mesenchymal stem cell-conditioned medium (secretome) imparts key therapeutic benefits at multiple stages of disease progression. Currently, no therapies provide meaningful effects on disease progression and there is currently no cure for ALS. As such, we believe our therapeutic approach could improve not only lifespan and neurological outcomes, but most importantly, the quality of life for patients afflicted with this terrible disease. Through work with faculty in the Medical and Molecular Genetics Department as well as close collaboration with the Cell and Gene Therapy Center at IUSM, we are advancing GMP/GLP production and submitting regulatory documents to advance such a therapy toward Phase I clinical trials.
