Juliet King PhDc, MA, ATR-BC, LPC, LMHC is an Associate Professor of Art Therapy at The George Washington University and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Professor King received her MA in Art Therapy from Hahnemann/Drexel University and has over two decades as a clinician, administrator and educator. As the inaugural director, she developed and implemented the graduate Art Therapy program at Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI, Indianapolis, IN and spearheaded the development of over 30 student internships in Indianapolis and surrounding regions. She also developed and continues to oversee the first Art Therapy in Neuroscience and Medicine program at the Indiana University Neuroscience Center. Professor King has worked with Herron Dean Greg Hull and Dr. Robert Pascuzzi in developing a new image-generating technology to improve the quality of life of patients/families affected by Lou Gehrig’s Disease. She has also conducted collaborative research with Dr. Robert Pascuzzi and Dr. Dragos Sabau from the IU School of Medicine Department of Neurology, art therapists Kaitlin Knapp and Alexandra Shaikh, statistician Fang Li and neurophysiologist Leisha Osburn in research that explores the cortical activation patterns in art making versus rote motor movement through EEG. Professor King’s research investigates the systematic integration of art therapy and cognitive neuroscience with a particular focus on contemporary neuroimaging as instrumentation to understand and measure the mechanisms of change in the therapeutic process. Professor King has organized symposia to spearhead transdisciplinary research in arts, health and related therapeutics and in 2016 she wrote and edited the first textbook merging the disciplines, titled Art therapy, Trauma and Neuroscience: Theoretical and Practical Perspectives; plans for the second edition are in motion. Currently Prof King is pursuing a PhD in Translational Health Sciences with a focus on neuroaesthetics-informed art therapy theory, research and practice with a specialty in the treatment of trauma and stress related challenges.
