Using mathematical modeling to uncover the role of blood flow in glaucoma
As an Associate Professor at IUPUI, I am working to develop a mathematical and computational framework based on clinical data to identify the relative contributions of risk factors to the development of glaucoma. This project aims to establish a unified theory of vascular factors that cause visual impairment in glaucoma and involves a collaborative team of mathematicians (Dr. Arciero from IUPUI and Dr. Fry from MSU Denver), ophthalmologists (Dr. Harris, Dr. Siesky, Dr. Pasquale, and Dr. Verticchio from Mt. Sinai) and statistician (Dr. Eckert from IUSM). I am working to produce a mathematical model that predicts the impact of factors such as flow regulation mechanisms, hematocrit, viscosity, and capillary density on retinal blood flow and tissue oxygenation in a realistic heterogeneous description of the retinal microvasculature. Combining this model with statistical approaches will help us create a comprehensive retinal health score that will identify individualized risk of glaucoma in the clinic and will also highlight disparities between glaucoma patients of European and African descent.
