Heterogeneous Data Modeling and Artificial Intelligent in Biomedical Informatics
A significant amount of my research exemplifies a collaborative model, working with researchers across the campus, other institutions around the globe, and industrial partner. Among all the collaborative research, my influential contributions stay on informatics approaches, machine learning, predictive modeling, and knowledge discovery. My collaborators are researchers and domain experts to enlighten me of the applications on various domains, including clinical research, healthcare services, biostatistics, computer simulations, medical imaging, and scientific databases. For example, 1) To reduce the burden on clinical professionals to learn bioinformatics skills, I directed my students for the deployment of a user-friendly online tool, the Cancer Gene and Pathway Explorer (CGPE). It provides an interactive gene analytical portal with an integrated, easy-to-use toolset for gene trends analysis, clinical association analysis, pathway analysis, network analysis, and cancer-cell-lines gene expression analysis. Our CGPE will further accelerate cancer biomedical research by providing insights from a genomic perspective. The IU Precision Health Grand Challenge is now requesting our CGPE for their PHI data sharing. Also, because of our CGPE, I am asked to lead the data portal and knowledgebase development for the new $36M IU ADDDC U54 Center grant from NIH. 2) The project outcomes of our patient-centered healthcare research include advanced computer simulations, evolving health data analytics, and brand-new dashboard visualizations. The Indiana Primary Health Care Association (IPHCA) have adopted our results in their strategic planning to provide signature technology services across the state of Indiana. We also have an ongoing contract with IPHCA for data analysis and technology training for Community Health Centers in Indiana. Some of the CHCs are using our computer simulations to identify problems and help tailor solutions when considering ways to improve access to care. • In our ongoing work on type-1 diabetes (T1D), supported by the Junior Diabetics Research Foundation (JDRF), I am in charge of the development of the bioinformatics approaches and biomarker discovery. I supervised my students using machine learning in bioinformatics. We have identified biomarkers for the early detection of T1D using combined proteomics and genomics data.
