Nutritional and pharmacological therapies and their effects on the gastrointestinal tract and its associated microbiome in chronic kidney disease; development of culturally-appropriate materials on lifestyle topics in Spanish for Hispanic/LatinX individuals living with chronic kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder is a multi-systems syndrome derived from kidney dysfunction that is associated with poor outcomes, including high risk of bone fractures, cardiovascular disease, mortality, and poor quality of life. My research program is currently exploring the effects of dietary fiber on intestinal mineral absorption in an experimental model of chronic kidney disease. Informed by the results of our experimental studies, my goal is to formulate interventions to improve chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder in individuals living with chronic kidney disease. Our research group consists of nephrologist, registered dietitians, research scientists, molecular biologists, and physical therapist.
