Partnering for Radical School Improvement: Preparing Every Teacher for English Language Learners
My research, teaching, and service integrate a focus on improving the educational opportunities and outcomes for multilingual learners through quality teacher preparation. I translate robust and complex theories of language, learning, and learner culture into what Petronio (2007, p. 215) describes as “new systems, procedures, or routines predicated on research findings that are geared toward developing functional practices” that improve educational equity for multilingual learners, especially in urban settings. I have advanced this agenda through extensive, longitudinal civic engagement, mixed methods research, and reciprocal relationships with multiple districts, schools, and teachers. This research has been translated into innovation in teacher learning through pedagogical coaching and a trainer-of-trainer school change leadership model that transforms teaching practices leading to improved teacher self-efficacy and improved learning environments and outcomes for English Language Learners (ELLs) and their teachers.
