Civic education in the elementary years: Promoting student engagement in an era of accountability
My research uses evidence based approaches of interviews, observations, and document collection with youth and teachers with the aim of promote justice-oriented civic education in schools, especially public schools. In the fall of 2022, for instance, I presented with six youth activists at a local conference, a presentation titled, Authentic Support for Youth Engagement in Social Justice. This presentation led to a manuscript submission that seeks to uncover how adults can act in "solidarity" with youth activists in ways that does not reproduce oppressive structures they are working to address. In addition to practice-based publishing and presenting with teachers and youth, my research is relevant in the field of educational policy studies and educational leadership as reflected in several co-authored policy-oriented publications with Dana Mitra. Our (2015, Teachers College Press) book is a longitudinal study of a democratic elementary school that has been used by teachers, principals, and as a course text for social studies methods across the nation.
