Engaged Art History and Collaborative Curatorial Practice
Dr. Laura M. Holzman is a specialist in engaged art history. She activates art, its history, and its institutions to strengthen communities, expand democratic discourse, and create a more equitable world. Drawing from an array of interdisciplinary, humanities-based methods including collaborative curatorial processes, she regularly works with arts administrators, students, community groups, and other partners to develop exhibitions, artwork, and public programs that advance jointly-defined goals. These projects typically blend expertise from participants’ academic knowledge, professional skills, and/or lived experience. Dr. Holzman’s collaborative and translational scholarship has addressed a range of issues including housing equity and neighborhood change, global access to medicines, and environmental justice. In 2021 she co-founded the Engaged Art History Community of Practice, which supports art historians around the world who embrace goal-oriented community collaboration and public address in their work.
