Risk stratification of African children with severe illness: biomarkers and therapeutic interventions
I am the director of a biomedical research laboratory in Uganda that supports clinical translational research at Indiana University School of Medicine. My research focuses on addressing pediatric infectious diseases that impact the ability of children to survive and thrive globally. Specific interests include severe malaria, sickle cell disease, and malnutrition as leading causes of mortality in African children. My research is conducted through a translational lens to identify new diagnostics that can help identify children at risk of both short- and long-term health problems and to identify interventions that may improve clinical outcomes, focusing on interventions that are appropriate, accessible, and affordable in a global health context. I have conducted several clinical trials in pediatric populations and identified and validated biomarkers being evaluated as triage tools to improve clinical management of sick children.
