New Book About History of Women's Jails and Prisons
|
2019 Bantz Fellowship recipient, Dr. Elizabeth Nelson, was interviewed in an article for The New Yorker about a recently published book that she co-edited. "Who Would Believe a Prisoner?: Indiana Women's Carceral Institutions, 1848-1920" is a groundbreaking book. The book was written by a collective of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women who investigated the early history of women's jails and prisons in Indiana. Learn more about the book. Study Examines Experiences with Healthcare Access and Telehealth Delivery for Black Veterans
|
TRIP Scholar, Dr. Marianne Matthias and her research partner Dr. Johanne Eliacin, interviewed Black veterans with chronic pain who experienced changes in healthcare delivery, including rapid increases in virtual delivery of healthcare, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of the research are located in a recently published journal article.

Lessons Learned From Studying Healthcare Aborad
|
In this episode, Dr. Aaron Carroll talks with Dr. Julie Manning Magid, executive associate dean of the IU Kelley School of Business in Indianapolis, and TRIP Scholar, Dr. Nir Menachemi, executive associate dean of the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, about the Kelley School’s global health course in its Physician MBA Program. Students recently had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the health care systems of the United Kingdom and France. Dr. Menachemi and Dr. Magid discussed the fascinating differences between health care systems and the cultures around them in different countries and the United States, as well as what American doctors can learn from these immersive international experiences.

Across the Worlds of Islam: Muslim Identities, Beliefs, and Practices from Asia to America
|
TRIP Scholar, Dr. Edward Curtis, IV, edited a recently published book that offers an inclusive view of the diversity and complexity of the many worlds of Islam, investigating ethics and aesthetics as much as scriptures and theology. By paying attention to Muslims who are socially, culturally, doctrinally, or politically marginalized, it provides a comprehensive and all-embracing vision of the religion and its many interrelated communities. TRIP Scholar Inducted as Fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwifes
|
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Dr. Deb Stiffler. She was recently inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwifes (ACNM) at the ACNM 68th Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Stiffler has been a certified nurse-midwife since 1986 and worked in practices in Florida, Michigan, and Indiana, assisting in the births of over 600 babies. She has been a champion for underserved women, working with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) to allow CNMs to care for and bill Medicaid for normal and high-risk pregnancy. She also worked with the State of Indiana on prescriptive privileges for advanced practice nurses.

|
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Dr. Mark Kelley. He received a $660,000 grant from the American Cancer Society, Incorporated to study "Post-Baccalaureate DICR Education Program (IADEP).

Bantz Fellow Receives Grants Totaling $10 Million
|
Congratulations to 2018 Bantz Fellowship recipient, Dr. Barbara Pierce and Indiana University. They were featured in Inside Indiana Business for receiving grants totaling $10 million to increase mental health services to students in K -12 Indiana schools. Dr. Pierce received $5.7 million of the total amount and IU Kokomo received the remaining $4.3 million.

TRIP Scholar Receives Promotion
|
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Dr. Tuan Tran. He was recently promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he studies both naturally acquired and vaccine-induced immunity to malaria using systems biology approaches.

TRIP Scholar Named as a 2023 IU Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellow
|
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Professor Rachel Wheeler. She was among eight Indiana University faculty members selected as the 2023 IU Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellows. The program supports stellar IU faculty with an academic year fellowship that accelerates and amplifies their research and advances their professional standing as national and international leaders in their various disciplines. Each of the eight fellows will receive $50,000 in flexible funding to support a mix of course releases, travel and other research needs.
Rachel Wheeler, professor of religious studies in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Wheeler's interests are focused on early American religious history, specifically the encounters of Native peoples and Europeans at mission sites to understand how they navigated the structures of colonialism. Wheeler will use the funding for a biography called "Joshua's America," about an 18th century Mohican-Moravian man who appears through the archives of the Moravian Church as well as in colonial records of the time.

TRIP Scholar Receives Research Equipment Funding
|
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Dr. Broxton Bird. He was among sixteen Indiana University faculty recipients of the 2023 Research Equipment Fund.
The Research Equipment Fund supports the purchase or development of research equipment or data by groups of investigators, working together or separately, on innovative projects that already have or will have the potential for sustainable external support. It helps faculty purchase research equipment, instrumentation or datasets in any field. With support from IU President Pam Whitten, the fund was expanded to $4 million in fiscal year 2023 and $5 million in fiscal year 2024.

Summer Celebration, Indiana Black Expo’s largest event that showcases Black Culture in Indiana is in its 52nd year. As a pillar of the state, IBE’s priority focus areas include economics equity, education equity, community empowerment and health equity. All proceeds from Summer Celebration help support IBE’s year-round initiatives, including its Education Conference, Black Business Training Institute, Scholarship Fund, Performing Arts Academy, Community Learning Hub and more.

Volunteers assist with setting up meal distribution sites, bagging meals, directing traffic, distributing community resources, loading food boxes and uplifting the community. Two shifts available: Packing from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., and distribution from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Light refreshments are provided for breakfast and a boxed lunch for the 9:30 am- 12:30 pm volunteers. Warm beverages and bottled water are available throughout the day.

The Kruse Family Stardust Terrace at the History Center is the place to be on Thursday nights in downtown Indianapolis. The 2023 Concerts on the Canal series features a spectacular lineup of entertainers. Concerts begin at 6 pm. While reserved tables are available for purchase, sit along the canal and enjoy the music for FREE. Guests can bring their own chair or blanket and sit on the grassy areas along the Central Canal. Another FREE perk is that the Indiana History Center is free during the summer concert season on Thursdays. The museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm. Free parking at the History Center is on a first-come basis. Nearby street or garage parking is available for a fee.

IUPUI Internship Grants for Central Indiana Employers
|
Internships are valuable opportunities for students to earn while they apply their knowledge, gain skills, and make connections to future employers. The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) offers grants of up to $1,500 per student intern to central Indiana not-for-profit organizations and small businesses.
Interns hired must be current IUPUI students in good standing in their schools, who are employed for one to two semesters (16-32 weeks) and engaged in meaningful, degree-focused, and career-related professional experiences in Fall 2023-Spring 2024. Students may work up to 20 hours per week, and employers are expected to provide match funding to receive the grant. There are a limited number of internship grants available for 2023-2024.

Eskenazi Health Farmer's Market Is Open
|
The Eskenazi Health Farmers’ Market provides fresh and local produce, fresh baked goods, plants and other market items to the public. In addition, this year’s market is offering a variety of music as well as resources and techniques to help reduce stress and improve mood.
Every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., The Commonground in front of the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, located at 720 Eskenazi Ave., will be transformed into a farmers’ market with several vendors, local farmers and games. The market goes throughout the summer months and ends Tuesday, Sept. 19. The event occurs rain or shine.
The farmers’ market also includes music, such as live concerts and a DJ, information on mindful eating, and experiential activities like stretch band exercises, meditation and stress level checks with skin thermometers. In addition, Rachel White of The Sky Farm at Eskenazi Health conducts demonstrations on herb drying, quick pickling, the importance of bees and more.

Secure Your Travel Devices When You Travel This Summer

Take steps to protect your data and mobile devices from cyber theft if you’re planning to travel this summer, especially if you are traveling abroad. Smaller devices travel better because you are less likely to leave them behind in your hotel room. Report a stolen device immediately to IU as a “Non-emergency security incident or privacy concern.”

How to store or share restricted or critical data at IU
|
Storing data correctly is the key to keeping it safe. Storage owners must use the Institutional Storage Request Form if storing or sharing restricted or critical data. IU’s University Information Policy Office also reminds you that individually owned storage spaces such as Google at IU My Drive and Microsoft OneDrive at IU are never an appropriate place to share institutional data.

Reciprocal Innovation Planning Grants Available
|
A new round of global health planning grants provides funding to establish research collaborations focused on improving the health and well-being of Hoosiers and people in resource-limited communities around the world. Proposals must address a critical global health challenge such as infectious or non-communicable diseases, infant and maternal health, mental health or access to quality health care and demonstrate collaboration with at least one partner from a low- and middle-income country. The application deadline is March 30, 2023.

Download Statistical Analysis Software At No Charge
|
A reminder that you can install statistical, mathematical, and qualitative analysis software packages such as SPSS and Stata for no additional cost. Since this UITS initiative began in July 2022, the number of downloads is three times higher than it was in the prior year, with around 3,000 students, faculty, and staff taking advantage of access to the software.

IU Center for Survey Research Capabilities and Expertise
|
The IU Center for Survey Research has capabilities from traditional survey design and data collection (using web, mail, telephone, in-person) to qualitative interviews to specimen collection. They provide up to 2 hours of free consultation to any IU faculty, staff, or student and then charge based on hourly rates determined by the university. During the academic year, they offer free weekly consulting at two locations on the Bloomington campus (Tuesdays from 10-12 and Wednesdays from 12-1:30) but are happy to meet by Zoom for people in Indy.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Substance Use Research Fund - Request for Proposals
|
New research funding from IU addresses racial and ethnic disparities specific to substance use disorder. $25,000 is available per grant. Funding will be available to IU faculty without regard to field or discipline to address this critical issue as broadly as possible. The research must be innovative, new, or reflect a new application of existing research. Priority will be given to efforts that seek to better understand and meet the needs of communities of color and utilize engagement methods with partners or the communities (such as community-based participatory research or person-centered outcomes research methods) which build sustainable relationships and trust in communities. All IU faculty (whether tenure-track or clinical track) on all IU campuses are welcome to apply.

Want to apply for a grant but need a statistician on your team?
|
The Indiana Statistical Consulting Center supports IU faculty, staff and graduate students by helping with the planning phase, writing the methodological portion of grant proposals, carrying out the proposed analysis and writing up results once the grant is funded. Collaborators will meet free of charge with the agreement that their efforts will be compensated by the grant if funded.
