TRIP Scholar Published Essay on the Necessity of the Humanities in a STEM-Driven World
TRIP Scholar, Dr. Rachel Wheeler , Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at IU Indianapolis, published a timely opinion piece in Inside Higher Ed, titled: A Cure for Humanities Deficiency Syndrome. She eloquently lays out a strong argument against the logic that has led to many universities across the country cutting Humanities programs. To help save the humanities, she encourages readers to consider one-credit “co-labs” in the Humanities attached to STEM courses.

TRIP Scholar Serves as Inaugural Dean at Butler University
Congratulations to 2017 Bantz Community Scholar Dr. Carolyn Gentle-Genitty. A social work and youth development scholar with years of experience leading system-wide initiatives at Indiana University, she will serve as the inaugural dean for the new Founder’s College at Butler University, a two-year program serving historically underserved students. Dr. Gentle-Genitty will join Butler on June 3, leaving her roles as Indiana University’s assistant vice president for university academic policy and professor in the School of Social Work. She will spend the next year hiring faculty and staff, recruiting students and developing the infrastructure for Founder’s College. The plans for a new two-year college were first announced in fall 2023. The two-year college, from which students receive an associate’s degree, aims to break down two main barriers to a Butler education for local high schoolers — the cost and traditional structure of an undergraduate degree in terms of timeline, course load and residential requirements.
