A New HIP Public: 2019 - 2024
Indiana’s Medicaid expansion, the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), has seen significant change since Professors David Craig and Pamela Napier’s team first conducted a community-engaged participatory study with HIP members and community partners in 2019. Personal responsibility is central to HIP’s program rules, which created barriers to coverage and care for many study participants. During COVID, these rules were suspended, and enrollment doubled. With the old rules returning, there is a renewed need to communicate HIP program benefits and rules clearly and expand public investment in supporting wellness for low-income neighbors. Their 2020 Bantz Community Fellowship team of visual designers and community partners co-produced public messages and images for a suite of materials including brochures and slide-decks to assist communities in connecting people to health coverage. Join this conversation to learn how our 2020 Bantz Community Fellows are working to support health and wellness for all.

Successful Retention Strategies for Research Targeting Hispanic/Latinx (Including Recent Immigrants) in the Midwest Region of the United States
In a recent journal article, 2021 Bantz-Petronio TRIP Award recipient, Dr. Gerardo Maupome and his co-authors, discuss the results of their VidaSana study. Recruiting and retaining Hispanic/Latinx participants, specifically undocumented immigrants, is challenging in part because of the mistrust and fear in participating in research studies. Additionally, only a few longitudinal studies describe the recruit and retention strategies among Mexican and Central American immigrants aiming to expand the knowledge base about those underprivileged groups; this was the objective of the 6-year longitudinal VidaSana study.

All-Girls Research Team Captures Eclipse for NASA
An all-girls research team took turns adjusting their telescope and other specialized equipment to capture images of the total eclipse on April 8 in Indianapolis, IN. Their images were sent to NASA in real time and may be included in an upcoming IMAX film about the eclipse. The research team was made up of middle and high school girls who are members of Girls' STEM Institute (GSI). Founded by IU Indianapolis Associate Professor of Mathematics and TRIP Scholar Dr. Crystal Morton, GSI aims to create an inclusive space for girls of color to explore STEM. GSI was selected to capture the images by Einstein’s Incredible Universe, a media project whose goal is to “catalyze interest in space science and spark scientific curiosity in lifelong learners, especially young women,” according to their official website.

A New HIP Public
During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, Indiana suspended certain Medicaid rules. Enrollment in Indiana’s Medicaid expansion program, the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), nearly doubled to over 800,000 working-age adults. On July 1, cost-sharing requirements return for HIP members. To keep HIP Plus, and its vision and dental benefits, members must pay monthly POWER Account contributions. If not, they drop down to the limited benefits of HIP Basic, requiring co-payments for each medical visit and medication. With support from a Charles R. Bantz Community Fellowship, Professor Pamela Napier, Herron School of Art and Design, and Professor David Craig, IU School of Liberal Arts at Indianapolis, worked with students and community partners to create a suite of brochures and slides to help people navigate HIP’s rules and complexity. We encourage you to share these and other resources from the project, “A New HIP Public.”

TRIP Scholar Receives Award
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Professor Genevieve G. Shaker and doctoral student Meng-Han Ho. They received the 2024 IU Indianapolis Open Education Award for having co-produced and published, “Giving and Volunteering in America,” an OER to be used in 100 level Philanthropic Studies courses. The book contains 39 primary sources, exploring the unique giving and voluntary behavior of Americans. The text is used by over 125 students a year across 6 sections. Ease of online access, high quality, topical relevance and the absence of cost to students make this OER an excellent replacement for a traditional textbook.

IUI Community-Engaged Research to Impact Health Equity Consortium
The newly established IUI Community-Engaged Research to Impact Health Equity Consortium is seeking to create a network of researchers who do or wish to do research that involves the community. Health in this Consortium is defined broadly, considering all social determinants of health, which are the upstream factors that eventually lead to poor health outcomes. Social determinants include a broad array of factors, such as income and job security, housing and basic amenities, the environment, education, criminal justice, exposure to violence, access to care, and more. If you want to learn more or have questions, please reach out to Silvia Bigatti, ude[dot]ui[at]ittagibs.

What is Research Translation and Why is it Important?
“It is important to understand the literal meaning of research translation – just like translating between languages, it involves taking academic jargon, models and publications, and translating them into more accessible language, formats and recommendations that can be understood and used by organizations, communities and policymakers,” said Christopher Rice, research translation and policy lead for the IU Center for Global Health Equity.

How to store or share restricted or critical data at IU

Storing data correctly is the key to keeping it safe. Storage owners must use the Institutional Storage Request Form if storing or sharing restricted or critical data. IU’s University Information Policy Office also reminds you that individually owned storage spaces such as Google at IU My Drive and Microsoft OneDrive at IU are never an appropriate place to share institutional data.
